While the education enterprise should be glad that curriculum (High-Quality Instructional Materials/HQIM) is finally being recognized as a key element in improving literacy instruction, the field's leaders must now deal with the challenge of implementation. This session aims to help leaders heading into this mission find the "right-sized boat", sharing (1) a vision of how (and why) curriculum should fit into schools' comprehensive literacy-instruction strategies, (2) cautions for leaders about potential missteps and mis-messages, and (3) recommendations for designing, shaping, and maintaining their schools' literacy strategies.

  • Biography Eric Kalenze is the author of Education Is Upside-Down: Reframing Reform to Focus on the Right Problems and What the Academy Taught Us: Transforming Schools from the Bottom Up in a Top-Down Transformation Era, and he regularly contributes pieces about education practice, research, and reform to publications like Education Week, Education Next, and The Hechinger Report, as well as to his blog, A Total Ed Case. Currently, Kalenze consults with schools/districts on their continuous-improvement and professional-development strategies, teaches secondary ELA and serves as the Curriculum and Instruction Lead at Fit Academy charter school in Minnesota's Twin Cities metro, and is the US Ambassador for researchED, an international grassroots organization dedicated to building evidence-supported practices in education.
