For today’s middle-schoolers, there is a whole new world of distractions: the constant influx of digital information and social media, begging to be consumed now. That’s a lot for English teachers to compete with, as they attempt to teach their students the skills necessary to be college- and career ready. With all that’s going on in middle-schoolers’ lives, what are the best ways to keep them engaged and focused, and to help them develop strong analytical, critical-thinking and problem solving skills? At the heart of high quality instruction students should: dig deeply into texts, analyze details, and grasp both literal and inferential meanings of complex texts. This session will provide meaningful and engaging strategies to support vocabulary instruction, reading comprehension, and critical thinking about complex text.
